Favorite Activities so Far this Fall

Our little family has been quite busy so far this year, working hard at having fun! Here are some our favorite things we've done so far.

Dan Nicholas Park http://www.dannicholas.net/
This was such a fun and inexpensive place to spend the day. It's near Salisbury and features a lot of activities. We enjoyed a carousel, train ride, gem mining, petting barn, nature center, aquarium, picnic area, mini golf, and a great playground. Less than $10 a person for everything! They also have paddle boats and a water plaza area for warmer days. This was one of the coolest parks we've been to... very relaxing... spread out under a canopy of trees in a cool forested area. Has a mountain campground feel. I highly recommend for a day trip!

We took a Sunday trip to see the leaves in the Boone area and rode to Blowing Rock. The kids loved posing on the rocks for pictures and walking the easy little trails. The view from top was really breathtaking and they loved looking in the viewers. Then we headed to Linville Caverns. This place was a hit! A 30 minute tour takes you through a real "cave" as the kids called it. They learned about stalagmites and stalagtites and saw real hibernating bats as they meandered through the cavern. It's just slimy and spooky enough to be fun but not scary. Great experience for kids.

This past Wednesday, we took the Amtrak train from Greensboro to the State Fair in Raleigh. The fair is always fun, but adding the train ride really pumped up the excitement factor. The little ones LOVED going to the depot and boarding the train. The ride itself was a lot of fun and the dining car was a special hit. The train stops right across the street from a fair gate and has a nice covered area for waiting. The "waiting" was a little tedious coming back since the train was a little late but all in all, it was a fun experience I would do again. I recommend bringing some little toys or books for entertainment if there is a wait or if the train ride loses its luster. We played cards, travel size games, and of course my little techie commandeered my iPhone for a session of Glass Tower.

Hope this gives you some new ideas for the season.

Fall Festivals Have Begun

We started out our festival and fair season this past weekend with the Central Carolina Fair and Carousel Festival. The fair was a lot of fun for little ones- a $15 wristband with unlimited rides was definitely the way to go. We went early so not crowded. Lots of rides for young children and teenagers alike. Games were really expensive! It also seemed that no matter what we played, $5 got us a pick out of the Medium prize bucket. I kind of miss the days of real skill or luck earning real cool prizes. Oh well. Everyone must feel like a winner these days.

The Carousel Festival was so much fun! If you haven't been before, check it out next year. My son and his companion enjoyed the arts and craft booths, the numerous inflatables and the free carousel, train and boat rides. The 100 year-old carousel is so beautiful and really different from any other ride we know. The food and inflatables were a little pricey in my opinion, so be ready to pay $1 each time your little one goes down the inflatable slide. The other free rides made up for it, though. There was also free music performances, magic shows and other kiddie entertainment. My son learned a little about juggling from one of the performers. This festival has the best Kettle Korn ever! We had to take a huge bag for on-the-way-home munching.

Here are some events for your coming weekend consideration. Get out and enjoy the season.

Weekday After School Fun Ideas

This week after school pickup, we have enjoyed a few brief outings in town. One day we met some friends at Krispy Kreme on Battleground in Greensboro. If you haven't had their soft serve ice cream, you gotta try it. We didn't eat it this time, but it's yummy. Mini donuts are great for little ones. Another after school treat was a cookie and milk (chai latte for mommy) at the newly expanded Delicious Bakery on Lawndale. Other favorite treat stops are:
-Coco for Loco Chocolate Shop on Westover Terrace
-Gnam Gnam gelato on Lawndale Dr.
-Feeney's Yogurt Bar on New Garden/Horse Pen Creek

Nothing like an after school treat!

We also went bowling after school one day at Triad Lanes on Wendover Ave. That is a really nice bowling facility. Not crowded, fairly clean and it has a FUN gameroom that Nick loves. The prizes are dispensed automatically in exchange for tickets. No waiting in line to collect your kid-junk.

Please share your after school ideas!

Solving the School Lunch Challenge

My son started his kindergarten year at Greensboro Montessori School this week and one of the new things in our life now is daily lunch packing. I decided to make a master menu of lunch options for him, divided into food groups. A couple of times a week, he makes out his menu for school lunch, choosing the indicated number of items from each column. After he makes menus for a few days, I go to the grocery store and buy the necessary items. It has made for a few extra errands for me, but other than that has worked great. He's excited about taking lunch, is practicing his writing and is actually eating his lunch. The favorite lunch so far has been scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and watermelon. I would love to hear from other moms about favorite lunch choices.
